Moldova, Peace Corps

Primăvara este aici!!

Spring has come to Moldova finally! While it’s not quite warm enough to put away the winter coat, the sun is out and its at least not bitterly cold anymore.

Yesterday, Saturday, was one of the first warm days here which was excellent because Balti had some visitors! Three other Peace Corps volunteers came into town to visit and explore the city. We showed them the center of town, took them to one of our favorite spots in the city, a lake on the outskirts of town, the piata and one of our favorite bars.

Last night was the surprise birthday for one of our favorite Moldovan friends, Natasha. At seven, the Peace Corps Volunteers met a few of Natasha’s other friends at a restaurant in the center of the city, Celentano’s which serves pizza, various other italian and Moldovan fare. Natasha was very surprised and we all enjoyed a great a dinner together.

The birthday cake; this type of cake is called a Kiev cake since it is from Ukraine. The inside is flaky sugary wafers and some icing, no actual moist cake.

After dinner all of us went to the city center to release a paper lantern, which is a tradition our Moldovan friends here have. They release a lantern for each person’s birthday and then that person makes a wish. After we released the lantern we all talked and walked around the center for a little while and then went home to bed.

Sunday (today) was spent seeing off our visitors and then in the office working on a grant and few other projects. (And of course uploading pictures and writing this blog post!)

About I think about that every day

I guess this blog will be a really long answer to the generic 'about me' question.
