Today I attended the official opening of the project my host mother in Balti, who is the Director of another NGO, has been working on. She is the Director of a program that along with an impressive Volunteer staff, created a Resource Center for environmental education or “Green School” that aims to provide information and training services about environmental protection to young people. The project was created through the programme section of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe and financed by the Government of Sweden.
The event started with my host brother and another volunteer from the project in traditional Moldovan garb and the Minister of Ecology from Chisinau officially opening the center. The event was attended by teachers, experts from Hungary and Romania, NGO partners of ‘Caroma Nord’ (my host mother’s NGO) and representatives from several other NGOs who work in the same field in Moldova.
After the official opening, several speeches and a small lunchtime masa, there was a round table discussion about “protecting the environment: priority objective of environmental education”. The round tables presented positive practices undertaken by organizations and institutions involved in the project. The major purpose of the event and project in general is to promote cooperation between the governmental and private sector in the implementation of joint projects in the Danube and Black Sea regions.
Overall the event was interesting, (although an overload of Romanian) went smoothly and was a success. I am excited to see where this project leads and happy that my host mom, who has been working almost non-stop can take a slight rest now.
